The Process Safety Laboratory is critical to any chemical facility, whether you are synthesising just a few kg of high value materials or multiple tonne facility each step of the process and each compound needs to be assessed for thermal stability and impact upon operator protection, plant safety, environmental impact and of course any potential damage to company standing and reputation in case of an incident.

The Process Safety Laboratory

Screening the first and most simple step requires an assessment of each raw material, intermediate or final product to determine its thermal stability within plant conditions. This will determine if further investigation is required, and is performed using a DSC or TSu specific screening tool.

Desired Conditions are studied using isothermal and reaction calorimetry to determine the heat and pressure rise associated with a process. From this data calculations such as potential adiabatic temperature rise, required cooling duty and the potential energy build up with scenrios such as miss-feeds can be determined.

Worst Case Scenarios, once determined need to be accurately assessed for full potential impact. Time to maximum rate, runaway time and pressure evolution are all determined by Accelerated Rate Calorimetry. Low Phi-factor systems can also be used for determining emergency venting solutions.

SADT, Time to Maximum Rate and the full package of thermal hazards data can be precisely determined using powerful kinetics software. With a well designed experimental series and advanced kinetics you significantly reduce the number of analysis required, reducing countless time and ressources performing complex experimentation.

Reaction Calorimetry

SIMULAR

Depending on the results of the thermal screening tests, it is possible to study the reaction on the larger scale (~1litre) with the SIMULAR. Here the objective is to study the desired reaction and confirm the safety and operability of the process.
SIMULAR is a computer controlled reaction calorimeter with features that allow all key reaction parameters to be reliably scaled, minimising the cost of pilot trials.
Reactions are run exactly as they will be on the large scale and conditions are accurately reproduced. Power output released under these
conditions is measured as the reaction is performed and the data can be put to a variety of uses.
